About this position

Duke University is recruiting a Postdoctoral Associate for the Human-AI Research Pipeline (HARP), an interdisciplinary research program within the Society-Centered AI Initiative. The position is based in Durham, North Carolina, United States and is an on-site appointment.

HARP studies how artificial intelligence affects students’ cognition, learning, well-being, social experiences, and decision-making. The postdoc will help build the research infrastructure and lead initial studies using EEG, eye-tracking, physiology, computational measures, experience sampling, and qualitative methods. The work is strongly oriented toward human-AI interaction, social cognition, collaborative learning, emotional regulation, and student-centered research design.

The project is led by Jana Schaich Borg (Associate Research Professor), with close collaboration from Rick Hoyle and Christopher Bail, both professors at Duke University. The role offers mentorship and collaboration across multiple disciplines, including psychology, sociology, computer science, and related fields.

Required qualifications include a completed Ph.D. or equivalent in neuroscience, psychology, computational social science, or a related field; experience with experimental or mixed-methods human-subjects research; hands-on work with EEG, physiology, eye-tracking, or similar wearable measures; strong statistics and programming skills; and evidence of scholarly productivity. Preferred experience includes AI in educational settings, longitudinal research, natural language logs, participatory/co-design methods, responsible AI, IRB/data governance, and mentoring students.

The appointment is full-time, with an initial one-year term and possible renewal depending on performance, project needs, and funding. Salary is $65,000 plus benefits. Applications are reviewed immediately and will continue until the position is filled.

To apply, submit a cover letter, CV, 1–2 page research statement, writing sample or comparable research product, and contact information for three professional references through the application portal. Questions may be directed to [email protected].
