About this position

The Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS) at the University of Miami is recruiting a Postdoctoral Associate in Marine Biology and Fisheries, with a strong focus on marine mammal bioacoustics, passive acoustic monitoring, underwater acoustics, and ocean noise.

The position is based in Miami, Florida, United States, at the NOAA Fisheries Southeast Fisheries Science Center Marine Mammal and Turtle Division, and will collaborate with scientists at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Universidad Veracruzana, and Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México.

Research topics include estimating marine mammal occurrence, density, abundance, trends, and noise impacts using vessel-based towed arrays, moored passive acoustic monitoring units, and acoustic-equipped gliders. The work also involves signal-processing tools for detection, classification, localization, underwater acoustic propagation modeling, quantifying long-term noise levels, and evaluating spatiotemporal variation in noise sources.

Applicants should hold a Ph.D. in oceanography, underwater acoustics, bioacoustics, marine biology, engineering, applied mathematics, or a related field. Strong experience with acoustic signal processing, automated algorithms, large passive acoustic datasets, underwater acoustic hardware, and research analysis is required. Skills in Matlab, R, IDL, Triton, Ishmael, XBAT Raven, PAMGUARD, machine learning, Bayesian statistics, and spatial/statistical modeling are preferred. Spanish fluency is a plus.

This is a full-time postdoctoral staff position. No deadline is stated in the post. Interested candidates should apply through the University of Miami Workday portal using the provided application link.
