About this position
Yale University is advertising a Postdoctoral Associate in Pharmacoepidemiology focused on drug repurposing and target trial emulation for addiction, with an emphasis on alcohol use disorder and the potential extension to other substance use outcomes.
The position is based in the Veterans Aging Cohort Study (VACS) at Yale School of Medicine, a long-running collaborative research network using large-scale longitudinal electronic health record data from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. The project involves real-world evidence studies of medications in routine care, including observational comparisons of treated and untreated patients, active comparator new-user designs, propensity score matching and weighting, and methods to address immortal time bias, prevalent user bias, and unmeasured confounding.
The successful candidate will work closely with Christopher T. Rentsch and co-mentor Lorenzo Leggio, gaining training in pharmacoepidemiology, causal inference, addiction medicine, and translational research. The role also offers opportunities to collaborate with NIH intramural teams and the wider VACS network, contribute to manuscripts and grant proposals, and develop independent research questions.
Eligibility highlights: a doctoral degree in epidemiology, pharmacoepidemiology, biostatistics, or a closely related quantitative field; strong knowledge of confounding by indication and target trial emulation; experience with large health datasets; and strong SAS programming skills. Preferred experience includes SQL, longitudinal analysis, difference-in-differences, trajectory modeling, negative controls, quantitative bias analysis, and prior work in alcohol/substance use, psychiatry, or HIV.
Funding: one-year full-time appointment, renewable subject to mutual agreement and availability of funds; salary commensurate with Yale postdoctoral policies and experience; benefits eligible; conference travel and professional development support may be available.
Location: New Haven, with VA data access through West Haven; hybrid work may be possible and fully remote work may be possible but is not guaranteed.
Application: submit a single PDF by email to [email protected] including a cover letter, CV, writing sample, coding sample, and three academic referees. Applications are reviewed immediately until the position is filled.

What's required
Applicants must hold a doctoral degree in epidemiology, pharmacoepidemiology, biostatistics, or a closely related quantitative discipline. Strong knowledge of confounding by indication, propensity score methods, and target trial emulation is expected, along with experience analyzing large electronic health record, claims, or other routinely collected datasets. Strong SAS programming skills are required; SQL is preferred. Candidates should have a publication record, excellent communication and organizational skills, ability to work independently and in multidisciplinary teams, and interest or experience in alcohol/substance use, addiction medicine, psychiatry, HIV, longitudinal analysis, difference-in-differences, trajectory modeling, negative controls, quantitative bias analysis, or grant applications. Eligibility requires a US citizen or lawful permanent resident because VA data access needs a VA WOC appointment and background investigation.
How to apply
Submit a single PDF by email to Christopher Rentsch at [email protected]. Include a cover letter, CV with publications, one writing sample, one coding sample, and names/contact details for three academic referees. Informal enquiries are welcome and applications are reviewed immediately until filled.
