About this position
Stony Brook University is advertising 2 Postdoctoral Research Associate positions in the mathematical and computational theory of stochastic gene expression with Prof. Ramon Grima’s research group.
The project sits at the interface of applied mathematics, statistics, machine learning, quantitative/systems biology, and computational biology. Successful candidates will develop methods that connect single-cell and spatial transcriptomic data to mechanistic models of gene regulation. Research topics include stochastic processes, probability theory, dynamical systems, statistical mechanics, chemical master equations, Fokker–Planck equations, stochastic simulation, inference, and deep learning for biological data.
Applicants must hold a PhD (or foreign equivalent) in Applied Mathematics, Physics, Theoretical/Computational Biology, Bioengineering, or a closely related quantitative field by the start date. Strong programming/scientific computing skills are required (Python, MATLAB, Mathematica, Julia, R, or C/C++). Preferred experience includes the Chemical Master Equation, stochastic simulation algorithms, approximation methods, single-cell or spatial transcriptomics, and machine learning/deep learning methods such as CNNs, LSTMs, or transformers.
The role includes developing mathematical and computational approaches, fitting models to single-cell data, co-authoring manuscripts, presenting at seminars and conferences, and mentoring students when opportunities arise. The position is full-time and regular, with a salary range of $61,000-$72,000. Employment is subject to funding availability.
Location: Stony Brook, New York, United States. Deadline: 2026-10-08. Apply online with a CV and cover letter through the university portal.
