About this position
The MIT Kavli Institute for Astrophysics and Space Research (MKI) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology is seeking two postdoctoral associates for research in X-ray astrophysics and X-ray instrumentation.
Successful applicants will work with the X-ray Detector Lab under the direction of Dr. Eric Miller and Dr. Catherine Grant. The group’s research spans the astrophysics of galaxy clusters and the development of X-ray detector technology, including work connected to NASA mission concepts and major collaborations such as NewAthena WFI, XRISM, and Chandra ACIS.
Possible research directions include analysis of X-ray observations of galaxy clusters using XRISM data, characterization of X-ray imaging detectors and supporting electronics, testbed design and instrument concept development, and advanced methods for background reduction and signal characterization for space-based X-ray imaging instruments.
The position is tailored to the successful applicant’s expertise and interests, and the postdocs will be encouraged to pursue independent projects and collaborate within or beyond MKI. Resources include access to the twin 6.5m Magellan telescopes, guaranteed observing time on the Chandra X-ray Observatory, and high-performance computing facilities.
Eligibility: applicants should have or expect to receive a Ph.D. in astronomy, astrophysics, or a related field by Fall 2027. Experience in observational X-ray astronomy or instrumentation is desirable, but the call encourages all interested candidates to apply.
Appointment length is two years with the possibility of extension to a third year. The start date is as early as Spring 2027.
