About this position

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Scholar in Astronomy at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, California, United States.

The position will work with Professor Kareem El-Badry and his research group on binary and multiple star evolution, with a strong emphasis on exploiting large astronomical surveys. Research directions may include use of data from Gaia DR4 and/or the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, as well as surveys such as SDSS-V, ZTF, and Euclid. There are also opportunities to propose observations with the Keck and Palomar Observatories.

The postdoctoral researcher is expected to focus at least partly on binary systems containing compact objects, while retaining flexibility to pursue independent projects in stellar astrophysics, binary astrophysics, and related observational astronomy topics. The successful candidate should have a strong background in observational astronomy and an interest in stellar and/or binary astrophysics, and will be encouraged to collaborate broadly within the Caltech research community.

Funding: salary is listed as $76,000–$82,000 per year, depending on experience and qualifications. Research expenses and travel support will be provided. Caltech also notes employee benefits including health, dental, and vision insurance, retirement savings plans, and paid time off.

Application: submit a CV and publications, a research statement describing interests and plans, and arrange for two letters of recommendation. Applications received before 2027-11-10 will receive full consideration.
