About this position
Postdoctoral Fellow in Few-Femtosecond Phase Transitions in Quantum Materials
IMDEA Nanociencia in Madrid, Spain, is offering a 2-year postdoctoral position in the Ultrafast Science of Quantum Materials (USQM) group. The project focuses on photoinduced phase transitions on the sub-50 fs timescale, with a particular interest in tracking the emergence of photoinduced ordering in manganites and using these transitions to enable novel nonlinear optical processes.
The successful candidate will lead experiments using a range of spectroscopic techniques in a highly active ultrafast-matter research environment. The work sits at the intersection of ultrafast optics, quantum materials, and experimental spectroscopy, and will involve both laboratory-based and facility-based approaches. The group studies light-driven phenomena in quantum materials and out-of-equilibrium phases, and is part of IMDEA Nanociencia’s broader nanoscience research ecosystem in Madrid.
Applicants should have a PhD or equivalent in physics, chemistry, or a closely related area. The post is especially relevant to candidates with experience in amplified femtosecond lasers, few-cycle pulse compression, pulse characterization, attosecond or X-ray beamlines, high-vacuum systems, cryogenics, compressed gas handling, quantum materials, ultrafast dynamics, control coding (Python preferred), data analysis, experimental design, or student training. Strong communication skills, organization, and team spirit are also valued.
The position is funded by the European Research Council and the Agencia Estatal de Investigación of Spain. It is a full-time temporary postdoctoral role, with a flexible start date expected in the fall. IMDEA Nanociencia highlights its commitment to gender equality and wider diversity in research, and particularly welcomes applications from women and other under-represented groups in physics.
Applications must be submitted via the IMDEA Nanociencia recruitment portal. Please include a CV and two references. The position reference is 20260902 - Postdoctoral USQM grupo. Deadline: 1 October 2026.
