About this position

IMDEA Nanoscience in Madrid, Spain is offering a fully funded 4-year PhD fellowship in the Ultrafast Science of Quantum Materials group (USQM). The project explores ultrafast nanoscale dynamics in quantum materials and neuromorphic devices, combining X-ray coherent diffractive imaging with nanofabrication methods.

The doctoral researcher will work on two closely related sub-projects. One part focuses on manufacturing structured ferroelectric films for a newly developed nonlinear X-ray imaging method. The other investigates current-switched memristive devices made from quantum materials, using coherent X-ray imaging to follow nanoscale switching dynamics under steady-state and pulsed current excitation. These projects are linked by shared materials classes, fabrication techniques, and imaging approaches.

Experiments will take place both at IMDEA’s ultrafast XUV imaging beamline and at large-scale X-ray facilities worldwide, giving the student access to a distinctive mix of laboratory and facility-based research. The group studies light-driven phenomena in quantum materials, with particular interest in phase transitions and out-of-equilibrium phases.

This position is supported by an FPI fellowship from the Agencia Estatal de Investigación of Spain. The post is open to candidates with a Master degree or equivalent in Physics, Optics, Chemistry, or a closely related field. A strong background in optics, nanofabrication, and/or condensed matter physics is desirable, and excellent English is required.
