About this position

Indiana University Bloomington is inviting applications for a Postdoctoral Fellow / Postdoctoral Scholar in Geography with a strong focus on hydrology, hydroclimatology, watershed hydrology, climate change impacts, environmental modeling, and climate-water interactions.

The position is based in the Department of Geography at Indiana University Bloomington and is jointly mentored by Dr. Darren Ficklin (Indiana University Bloomington) and Dr. Margaret Zimmer (University of Wisconsin–Madison). The scholar will join the Ficklin Lab, collaborate with students and researchers at Indiana University, and also interact with Dr. Zimmer’s group at Wisconsin.

This is an independent research postdoc: applicants are expected to propose their own project, rather than work on a fixed topic. Suggested areas include watershed and catchment hydrology, surface water-groundwater interactions, non-perennial streams, soil water, streamflow and stream temperature, hydrologic connectivity, extreme hydroclimatic events, climate and hydrologic data analysis, remote sensing, data science, and computational or modeling approaches.

Eligibility: a Ph.D. in Geography, Hydrology, Climate Science, Earth or Environmental Science, Atmospheric Science, or a closely related field by the start date. Strong quantitative/computational/observational research experience and scientific programming skills are preferred.

Funding: two-year, full-time postdoctoral appointment with a listed salary of 60,000.

How to apply: submit a cover letter, CV, two-page research proposal, two representative publications or manuscripts under review, and contact information for two professional references. The proposal should explain the research question, methods, expected outcomes, and how the project complements the expertise of Drs. Ficklin and Zimmer.

Deadline: best consideration date is 2026-12-01. Expected start date is 2027-01-04.
