About this position

The University of Stavanger is inviting applications for a Postdoctoral Fellow in Physics at the Faculty of Science and Technology, Department of Mathematics and Physics in Stavanger, Norway. This is a 3-year, full-time temporary postdoctoral position associated with CoreQCD, a research project supported by the Research Council of Norway. The project focuses on the theoretical description of strongly interacting matter under extreme conditions.

Research interests in this position include quantum chromodynamics (QCD) at high temperatures and densities, the equation of state of strongly interacting matter, perturbative QCD, thermal and dense quantum field theory, and applications to neutron stars and heavy-ion collisions. The position is designed to help the successful candidate build a strong research profile and qualify for a future Associate Professor role.

The postdoctoral fellow will be based at the University of Stavanger and will receive support for academic and professional development through supervision, competence development, and career planning. The appointment may also include career-promoting duties such as teaching and student supervision. If needed, UiS will facilitate development of educational competence required for an Associate Professor position.

Eligibility highlights: applicants must hold a PhD in physics or a closely related field with specialization relevant to the project, and the doctorate must be fully completed before appointment. Strong English communication skills are required. The university also emphasizes research quality, integrity, motivation, international experience, collaboration skills, structured working methods, and the ability to contribute to interdisciplinary and socially relevant research.

Funding and benefits: the salary follows the Norwegian State Salary Scale, code 1352, at NOK 640,000 to NOK 740,000 gross per year, with possible higher salary in special cases. Additional benefits include free Norwegian language courses, pension and insurance coverage, relocation support, health services, parental leave, and a well-developed welfare system.

Application deadline: 8 November 2026 at 23:59 (Europe/Oslo).
