About this position
Postdoctoral Fellow in Relative Permeability in Shale at The University of Texas at Austin, based at the Pickle Research Campus and the Bureau of Economic Geology within the Jackson School of Geosciences.
This postdoctoral opening focuses on multiphase flow, gas-condensate relative permeability, capillary pressure, fluid saturation, and fracture-matrix interactions in unconventional shale reservoirs. The successful candidate will join a fast-moving research cohort working at the interface of laboratory experiments and analytical/numerical modeling to improve understanding of subsurface fluid transport and production behavior.
The role includes operating and developing advanced gas-expansion and liquid-transient flow systems, measuring effective permeability and multiphase transport properties, and building models to interpret laboratory data. There are also opportunities to develop new experimental approaches for difficult capillary pressure measurements and to study fracture conductivity and fluid exchange between propped fractures and the shale matrix.
Eligibility highlights: a PhD in Petrophysics, Geomechanics, Petroleum Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Geosciences, or a closely related geosystems field; strong experimental background in high-pressure core experiments or petrophysical measurements; deep understanding of tight/unconventional formation flow; and strong skills in Python, MATLAB, or LabVIEW. The PhD must have been earned within 3 years of the hire date. Preferred experience includes CMG GEM, ECLIPSE, coupled geomechanics-fluid flow simulation, digital rock physics, image analysis, or CT scanning.
Funding: the position is supported by newly secured industrial project funding and offers a salary of $65,000. The appointment is full time and expected to continue until 2027-08-31, with renewal dependent on funding, performance, and research progress.
How to apply: submit your application in Workday using the job link. Prepare a resume/CV, a letter of interest, and 3 work references with contact information. Current UT Austin employees and contingent workers must apply through Workday/Find UT Jobs and upload all required materials in the application questions.
