About this position
The Superti-Furga Lab at CeMM in Vienna and the newly founded Cori Institute of Molecular and Computational Metabolism of the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Graz are recruiting two postdoctoral fellows to work at the interface of metabolism, membrane transport, cellular regulation, structural systems biology, machine learning, and disease mechanisms.
This opportunity is designed for researchers interested in decoding how cells coordinate transport, metabolism, protein interactions, mitochondrial function, translation, and adaptive stress responses, and in using that knowledge to understand and perturb disease-relevant biology. The positions are embedded in a transition from CeMM in Vienna to the Cori Institute in Graz, offering a unique environment at a founding-stage institute with strong scientific ambition.
Track 1 is a computational biology/machine learning project focused on membrane protein interactions. It is part of the WWTF-supported mlDIAMANT collaboration with Peter Sykacek’s group at BOKU Vienna. The project uses AI and machine learning to decode interaction archetypes of membrane proteins, predict the effects of genetic variants, and interpret large-scale structural systems biology datasets derived from membrane transporter interactomes. The work will involve classification of protein-protein interaction modes, motif discovery, and structural cataloguing. This track is especially suited to candidates with a PhD in bioinformatics, structural biology, computational biology, or a related field.
Track 2 is an experimental project in metabolism, mitochondrial signalling, and translational control based in Graz. It will investigate how metabolic state, mitochondrial function, nutrient availability, and small-molecule perturbations influence protein synthesis, stress responses, and disease-relevant phenotypes. Methods may include molecular and cellular biology, mitochondrial biology, chemical biology, CRISPR genetics, quantitative biochemistry, imaging, and omics profiling such as metabolomics, proteomics, or transcriptomics. This track is especially suited to candidates with a PhD in cell biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, metabolism, mitochondrial biology, chemical biology, translational control, functional genomics, proteomics, or metabolomics.
The institute welcomes driven, curious, rigorous, and collaborative scientists. Candidates do not need to have worked on these exact topics before. More important are mechanistic thinking, careful experimentation or computation, intellectual independence, willingness to learn, and the ability to connect molecular detail with broader biological questions.
Successful applicants will join an experienced, international, and interdisciplinary research environment with expertise in membrane transport, metabolism, chemical biology, functional genomics, proteomics, structural analysis, bioinformatics, imaging, physiology, machine learning, and drug discovery. Track 1 begins linked to CeMM in Vienna and then develops toward Graz; Track 2 starts in Graz. The institute emphasizes scientific culture building, collaborative practices, and a strong team spirit.
Funding is provided as a competitive salary of €5,014.30-€5,499.10 gross per month, paid 14 times, based on FWF recommendations, together with a benefits package and support for relocation to Graz, including relocation reimbursement and visa support.
