About this position
Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) is advertising a two-year postdoctoral fellowship in biological nitrogen fixation in boreal forests at the Department of Forest Ecology and Management in Umeå, Sweden.
The project focuses on nitrogen fixation activity in ecological niches such as soil, deadwood, and mosses, using field and/or greenhouse experiments. Methods may include stable isotope labeling and/or DNA-based approaches. The work may also explore interactions among diazotrophs, fungi, and plants. The successful candidate will join the Forest Vegetation Ecology group and be supervised by Stefan Hupperts and Michael Gundale.
Applicants should have a PhD in forest ecology or a related field, with background in areas such as plant community ecology, microbial ecology, soil ecology, biogeochemistry, ecosystem science, community and ecosystem genetics, and/or forestry. Strong English writing and speaking skills are required, together with the ability to work independently and collaboratively and to produce publications for international peer-reviewed journals. Field and laboratory experience and/or bioinformatics are especially valued. Experience with stable isotope techniques, soil sampling, molecular or gene-based methods, or plant community composition and functional traits is beneficial but not required.
This is a scholarship-funded postdoctoral position, supported by the Kempe Foundation, with a stipend of 30,000 SEK per month tax free paid bi-annually over two years. The position is based in Umeå, Sweden. The start date is flexible from autumn 2026 to spring 2027, but the candidate must start no later than 2027-04-15.
To apply, submit the application online before 2026-08-27. Prepare a cover letter, CV, and a list of three references in English. For questions about the stipend position, contact Stefan Hupperts at [email protected].
