About this position

PhD opportunity in Biology at Lund University for a project in microbial ecology, soil biogeochemistry, and drought resilience.

The doctoral student will join the Microbial Biogeochemistry in Lund (MBLU) environment in the Department of Biology at Lund University. The project is supervised by Professor Johannes Rousk and Dr. Lettice Hicks and focuses on how soil microbial communities adapt their traits to maintain performance during drought and after drought ends. The research combines controlled laboratory experiments, greenhouse pot experiments, and field experiments to study microbial resistance, resilience, ecological and physiological underpinnings, and links to ecosystem biogeochemistry.

Research themes include soil carbon and nutrient cycling, microbial growth in intact soils, isotope tracing methods (stable and radioisotopes), microbial functional traits, and modeling of ecosystem processes. The work is highly laboratory-intensive but also includes opportunities for fieldwork, such as rainfall exclusion treatments and other drought simulations in terrestrial and arctic environments.

Eligibility highlights: an MSc or equivalent in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, Physical Geography, Soil Science, Biogeochemistry, or a closely related field; an independent degree project of at least 30 credits in a relevant subject; excellent English; documented research experience; ability to work independently; and practical laboratory experience. Preferred experience includes isotope-based methods, fieldwork, data handling, and statistical analysis.

Funding and employment: this is a full-time fixed-term doctoral employment. Third-cycle studies normally last 4 years, with possible extension for teaching or other departmental duties (up to 20%). Salary is monthly; no stipend amount is stated.
