About this position

Postdoctoral Fellowship x2 at the University of the Witwatersrand, School of Public Health, Johannesburg, South Africa, hosted under the SARChI Chair and AFRHiCARE led by Professor Laetitia Rispel.

This opportunity is focused on public health, health policy and systems research, human resources for health, health economics, biostatistics, healthcare management, and related work on first referral hospitals in sub-Saharan Africa. Research themes include health worker mobility and retention, absenteeism, precarious work and patient outcomes, staffing levels and quality of care, leadership and interprofessional collaboration, workplace violence, decision space of managers, and harmonisation of health professions council data.

Fellows will work on pre-defined topics, develop an independent contribution, and collaborate with AFRHiCARE partners. The post also offers opportunities to learn new methods, engage in cross-country comparative research, teach, and supervise postgraduate students.

Eligibility highlights: PhD in public health, health economics, or biostatistics within the past five years; SAQA certificate if the PhD was not obtained in South Africa; familiarity with HRH or healthcare management; advanced research skills; experience with STATA, MAXQDA or NVivo; at least two peer-reviewed publications; ability to work in a multidisciplinary team; age 40 or younger; and advanced English proficiency.

Funding: 1-year postdoctoral fellowship initially, renewable for a second year based on progress and funding, with a tax-free stipend of R370 000 per annum.
