About this position

Stanford University’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is recruiting a postdoctoral research scholar in three-dimensional sediment transport modeling. The project centers on developing and implementing an open-source hydrodynamic and sediment transport modeling framework for San Francisco Bay using the DFlow-FM modeling suite.

The first phase of the project focuses on implementation and validation of cohesive sediment transport routines for erosion and settling using a population balance approach, including flocculation and breakup parameterizations based on flow, turbulence, and sediment properties. A later phase will extend the work to data assimilation methods, including the ensemble Kalman filter and adjoint approaches, to infer cohesive sediment transport parameters from observations.

The postdoc will work with Professor Oliver Fringer at Stanford University and collaborate with Professor Galen Egan at Princeton University. The project is funded by the San Francisco Bay Regional Monitoring Program and administered by the San Francisco Estuary Institute.

Eligibility highlights: Ph.D. in Civil and/or Environmental Engineering, Physical Oceanography, Applied Mathematics, or a closely related field by the start date; experience with DFlow-FM hydrodynamics, waves, and sediment transport; strong programming skills in MATLAB, Python, and Fortran/C/C++; and a strong publication record.

Funding: The appointment is up to approximately 1.5 years for the first phase, with a listed pay range of $80,000–$85,000.

How to apply: Email a CV, cover letter, and three references to [email protected] with the specified subject line. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled.
