About this position

Uppsala University’s Department of Chemistry at the Ångström Laboratory is recruiting a postdoctoral researcher for a 2-year full-time position in advanced structural analysis and electrochemical applications of carbon materials. The project focuses on developing and characterizing carbon materials such as natural graphite, porous carbon, and hard carbon for energy storage applications.

The position is embedded in a collaborative and interdisciplinary project involving Uppsala University, industrial partners, and research institutes. The successful candidate will help establish detailed structure–electrochemistry relationships in disordered carbon and natural graphite, combining experimental electrochemistry with advanced structural characterization and data analysis.

Research activities include designing and carrying out total X-ray and neutron scattering experiments, performing pair distribution function (PDF) analysis, and applying small-angle X-ray and neutron scattering (SAXS/SANS) to study pore microstructure and morphology. The role also involves working with electrochemical testing, battery research laboratory infrastructure, and a broad range of characterization tools, including XPS, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis, SEM, and TEM. Access to national and international infrastructure, including MAX IV, is highlighted as a major asset for the project.

The department is seeking a highly competent and motivated researcher with a PhD in chemistry, materials science, or a related subject. Priority is given to candidates who completed their PhD within the last three years. Excellent English proficiency is required, along with strong expertise in experimental and theoretical electrochemistry and documented experience in disordered carbon structure analysis and battery testing. Experience with machine learning, molecular dynamics simulations, synchrotron facilities, Python, and industrial or academic battery manufacturing is considered advantageous.

Applications must be submitted online by 26 October 2026 via the specified Varbi link. The application should include a cover letter, a short CV, a publication list, conference contributions, and contact details for 2-3 referees. Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed via Zoom shortly after the deadline.

For further information, contact Dr. Habtom D. Asfaw at [email protected].

What's required

Applicants must have a PhD degree in chemistry, materials science or a related subject at the time of application. Priority is given to candidates who obtained their PhD within the last three years, with parental leave or career breaks excluded from the time calculation. Excellent spoken and written English is required. Candidates must have a strong background in both experimental and theoretical electrochemistry, documented experience in structure analysis of disordered materials such as hard carbon, and battery testing. Strong expertise in at least two of the following is required: synthesis, functionalization and characterization of carbon materials for batteries; understanding of sodium-ion, lithium-ion or similar battery devices; theoretical electrochemistry and electrochemical methods such as voltammetry, galvanostatic techniques and electrochemical impedance analysis; Raman spectroscopy; small-angle X-ray/neutron scattering and total X-ray scattering with PDF analysis on carbon materials; electron microscopy (SEM/TEM); data analysis, machine learning, and molecular dynamics simulations. Experience in industrial and academic battery manufacturing, laboratory and project management, programming/Python, and teaching is advantageous.

How to apply

Apply online through the Varbi application link. Submit a cover letter, a short CV including a link to your PhD thesis if available, a list of publications and conference contributions, and contact details for 2-3 referees. Include degree certificates, transcripts, and other relevant documents in English or Swedish, or certified translations if needed.
