About this position
King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) is offering a postdoctoral position focused on alloy development for well downhole sealing in the oil and gas industry. The project sits within KAUST’s Physical Science and Engineering Division, in the area of Materials Science and Engineering, and is aimed at developing a metallurgical solution that can be used for sealing and plug-and-abandonment (P&A) applications in downhole wells.
The successful candidate will be responsible for formulating, designing, and preparing an alloy that incorporates bismuth or other metals/materials known for sealing properties. The work includes understanding the sealing mechanism through characterization, and testing the material under demanding operating conditions, including temperatures in the range of roughly 200–300 °C. A strong emphasis is placed on producing a solution that is suitable for direct field implementation, not just laboratory study.
This opportunity is well suited to a metallurgist or materials engineer with a background in low-temperature soldering alloys, especially bismuth- or lead-based systems, and with experience in computational analysis such as finite element analysis. The post also calls for familiarity with creep and aging behavior in metal alloys, as well as an understanding of industrial standards and the property requirements for low-melting-point materials used in downhole settings.
The compensation package is attractive and includes a competitive tax-free salary, free on-campus housing, health insurance, round-trip ticket, 22 days of annual vacation, and additional benefits. Remote work may also be possible.
