About this position

Postdoctoral position in bacterial pathogenesis at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, within the Institute of Biomedicine and the newly established Wallenberg Centre for Molecular and Translational Medicine (WCMTM).

The project focuses on bacterial intrauterine infections in pregnancy, especially how specific bacterial factors breach the protective cervical mucus plug (CMP) and contribute to preterm birth. The work sits at the intersection of mucosal biology, infection biology, microbial genetics, and pre-clinical disease modelling.

The successful candidate will work with bacteria, genetic manipulation, and mouse infection models, and will contribute to project planning and the local research environment. The group is led by George Birchenough (senior lecturer) at the Department of Medical Biochemistry & Cell Biology, and collaborates with the Mucin Biology Groups cluster and the wider WCMTM network.

Eligibility: a doctoral degree or equivalent is required before appointment. Applicants should have a relevant PhD, strong written and spoken English, and essential experience with animal bacterial infection models. Experience in microbial genetics, microscopy, mass spectrometry, organoid culture, flow cytometry, bioinformatics, or in vivo disease modelling is an advantage.

Employment: full-time, temporary postdoctoral position for two years with the possibility of a one-year extension. Salary is set individually.

Application deadline: 2026-10-21. Apply via the University of Gothenburg recruitment portal and include a cover letter, CV with publication list, and proof of completed PhD.
