About this position
Postdoctoral researcher position at the University of Barcelona within the Artificial Intelligence in Medicine Lab for the AFRICAI-RI Horizon Europe project.
The project develops trustworthy AI solutions for multimodal medical imaging to support diagnosis and clinical decision-making in respiratory diseases, especially tuberculosis and pneumonia. The work is embedded in a dynamic, internationally connected research group in Barcelona with expertise in machine learning, deep learning, biomedical informatics, trustworthy AI, and medical AI.
The successful candidate will contribute to federated, privacy-preserving imaging research for Sub-Saharan Africa, working with heterogeneous biomedical and clinical datasets and helping design AI methods that transfer across centres, modalities, and contexts. The project aims to improve access to medical imaging expertise, support local capacity building, and develop clinically relevant tools for X-ray, ultrasound, and related modalities.
Why apply: the role offers research freedom, collaboration with international and interdisciplinary partners, opportunities for travel and project meetings, support for career development and grant applications, and the possibility to supervise PhD students. The contract is full-time, temporary, and funded under Horizon Europe, with a gross salary of €40,000 per year.
Eligibility highlights: applicants should have a PhD or equivalent; a strong background in machine learning/deep learning; experience in medical image analysis and biomedical datasets; solid Python and ML framework skills; a publication record in relevant AI/medical imaging venues; and excellent English. Experience with trustworthy AI, federated learning, domain adaptation, and privacy-preserving approaches is advantageous.
Application deadline: 30 October 2026. Applications are submitted via the University of Barcelona website/GAIA system. Required documents include a CV, motivational letter, and online registration form. Contact: [email protected].
