About this position

The Physical Science and Engineering Division at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) invites applications for a postdoctoral position focused on battery safety. This role is ideal for researchers with expertise in battery safety, thermal management, and computational modeling, and offers the opportunity to work at the intersection of experimental and simulation-based research to advance the safety of lithium-ion and next-generation batteries.

The successful candidate will design and conduct experimental studies to evaluate the thermal stability, abuse tolerance, and safety limits of batteries using advanced techniques such as ARC, DSC, overcharge, and mechanical abuse testing. In addition, the postdoc will develop and validate electrochemical-thermal-mechanical models to simulate battery behavior under both normal and failure conditions, with a particular focus on thermal runaway, predictive diagnostics, and mitigation strategies. The research will also involve analyzing coupled failure mechanisms, designing frameworks for battery management systems, and investigating fire suppression and propagation-mitigation strategies for safer battery module and pack design.

Applicants should hold a PhD in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrochemistry, Applied Physics, or a related discipline. Essential qualifications include hands-on experience in battery safety characterization, expertise in multiphysics modeling and simulation (using tools such as COMSOL or ANSYS), strong coding skills, and a proven publication record. The ability to work independently and collaboratively in an interdisciplinary environment, as well as excellent communication skills, are required. Proficiency in English is expected.

KAUST offers a competitive, tax-free salary, free on-campus housing, comprehensive health insurance, and 22 days of annual vacation, along with additional benefits. The position is full-time, with a 40-hour work week, and is based in Thuwal, Makkah, Saudi Arabia. Applications must be submitted through the Interfolio portal; direct emails or LinkedIn messages to professors are not accepted. Only selected candidates will be contacted by email.

The application deadline is September 17, 2026. For more information and to apply, visit the Interfolio application link provided.
