About this position
INRAE is advertising a postdoctoral position in epidemiological modelling, Bayesian inference, and artificial intelligence at its research unit on animal and zoonotic diseases. The work is based at the VetAgro Sup campus in Marcy-l’Étoile near Lyon, France, within the National Research Institute for Agriculture, Food, and Environment (INRAE).
The postdoc will join a team working on the GeoAI4EI Horizon Europe project and the French ANR project CRISPOX. The research focuses on developing simulation-based inference methods and AI-driven tools to calibrate spatially explicit mechanistic models of pathogen spread using heterogeneous data sources.
Key topics include Neural Posterior Estimation (NPE), Neural Likelihood Estimation (NLE), Bayesian inference, deep learning, phylodynamic modelling, genomic analyses, and integration of epidemiological, demographic, mobility, environmental, and geospatial data. Applications include seasonal influenza, SARS-CoV-2, and lumpy skin disease virus in cattle.
The successful candidate will implement reproducible pipelines in Python and/or R, contribute open-source tools, and help disseminate results through publications and conference presentations. The role involves collaboration with French and European partners, with occasional travel and partial remote working possible.
Eligibility highlights: a PhD in epidemiology, ecology, statistics, artificial intelligence, physics, applied mathematics, or a related quantitative field; strong expertise in at least two relevant methodological areas; and excellent English communication skills. Experience with PyTorch, JAX, Pyro, sbi, Stan, Git, and Linux is desirable.
Funding: 24-month postdoctoral contract with salary from €3,559.17 gross per month. Deadline: 2026-09-20.
