About this position

North-West University (Potchefstroom, South Africa) is inviting applications for one postdoctoral position in a project on short-term microbial diversity characterisation in South African estuaries. The research examines microbial communities associated with anthropogenic stressors, with a strong focus on environmental science, microbiology, geochemistry, and estuarine ecosystem health.

The project investigates how geochemical variation, contamination levels, seasonal microbial shifts, and human impacts shape estuarine systems. It also includes environmental DNA sequencing, metabarcoding, bioinformatics, and biostatistical analyses, with additional value placed on knowledge of trace element geochemistry and sedimentology. The work is intended to support sustainable management, pollution mitigation, and conservation of coastal water bodies.

Funding: The position is funded by the National Research Foundation (NRF) South Africa and carries funding of R320,000 per annum. The appointment is funded until December 2027.

Eligibility highlights: Applicants must hold a PhD in Microbiology (or have completed it), have graduated within the last five years, and be willing to relocate to North-West University in Potchefstroom for the duration of the project. Candidates currently finishing their doctorate may apply if the PhD will be completed by 31 May 2026. A valid South African driver’s licence is preferred.

How to apply: Send a CV, academic transcripts, and a letter of motivation to Prof. Eugene Bergh and Prof. Kgauelo Lekota using the subject line Postdoctoral application 2026. The deadline for applications to reach the contacts is 21 May 2026.
