About this position

Postdoctoral Position in MRI Microscopy and Brain Metallomics at the Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences (MPI CBS), Leipzig, Germany.

The Dept. of Neurophysics is inviting applications for a postdoc to develop novel methods in quantitative MRI, MRI microscopy, and brain metallomics. The project combines ultra-high-field MRI, in-cell magnetometry of paramagnetic metals, diamond-based quantum sensing (NV magnetometry), and advanced histology to build new tools for studying brain metal homeostasis and neurodegeneration.

Research themes include microstructure imaging, in-vivo histology, MRI acquisition and processing, signal modeling, multimodal data integration, and complementary elemental analysis. The work is closely linked to clinically relevant questions in Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease and offers access to 3T, 7T, and 9.4T MRI systems, including a Siemens 7T Terra.X and a 9.4T preclinical Bruker scanner.

Eligibility highlights: PhD in physics, biomedical engineering, neuroscience, or a related field; strong MRI/neuroimaging background; programming in Python and/or MATLAB; experience with neuroimaging tools such as SPM, FreeSurfer, and hMRI toolbox; excellent English. Helpful extras include preclinical MRI experience, MRI sequence development, and interest in neurodegeneration or brain metal homeostasis.

Funding and duration: The post is tied to the third-party funded NEUROMAQ project and is subject to fund allocation. The appointment is for 3 years initially, with remuneration according to the Max Planck Society pay scale.
