About this position

ETH Zurich is offering a postdoctoral position in Optical Systems for Advanced Biofabrication within the Tissue Engineering and Biofabrication Laboratory led by Prof. Marcy Zenobi-Wong. The group is embedded in the Department of Health Sciences and Technology (D-HEST) and the Institute for Biomechanics, and works at the interface of biomedical engineering, materials science, biology, and photonics.

The successful candidate will help develop light-based 3D bioprinting and optical control approaches for engineering functional tissues with multi-scale porosity and topological guidance. The role focuses on designing, simulating, and building custom optical setups and beam-shaping systems, as well as characterizing how structured light fields interact with photosensitive polymers. The aim is to translate photonic concepts into engineered scaffolds relevant to regenerative medicine and tissue engineering.

Applicants should hold a PhD in Optical Engineering, Photonics, Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering with an optics focus, or a related field. Strong experience in laser beam shaping, phase modulation, and optical modeling/numerical analysis using tools such as Python or MATLAB is expected. The post also calls for strong publication output, excellent English communication skills, and a collaborative mindset for interdisciplinary research.

Preferred or advantageous experience includes multi-photon polymerization for optical devices, meta-lens or meta-surface work, adaptable optics, and non-diffractive beam design. The position is funded for 1.5 years and is based at ETH Zurich in Switzerland. Applicants must apply through the online portal and submit a CV, publication list, and references. Questions about the position can be directed to Marcy Zenobi-Wong at [email protected].
