About this position

Postdoctoral Fellow / Process Engineer for metal-assisted chemical etching at ETH Zurich / Paul Scherrer Institute, Switzerland.

This opening is part of the SNSF-funded project ABSOLUTE (nAnoassemBled catalySt and electrOchemicaL processing for hUge aspecTratio microstructurEs), led in collaboration with the X-ray Imaging Professorship and the Paul Scherrer Institute. The project aims to advance clinical translation of grating-based X-ray interferometry through state-of-the-art X-ray optics and micro-/nanofabrication.

The successful candidate will work on metal-assisted chemical etching (MacEtch) of silicon, defect control, process optimization, scalability, and characterization of high-aspect-ratio microstructures. Research activities include UV photolithography, thin-film deposition, thermal treatments, SEM, optical microscopy, profilometry, metrology development, and data analysis for robust fabrication of next-generation X-ray optical components.

Eligibility highlights: PhD in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, Engineering, or a closely related field; experience in semiconductor cleanroom environments; hands-on photolithography and SEM; silicon etching and MEMS fabrication are highly desirable; strong analytical skills; ability to work in multidisciplinary academia-industry teams; excellent English; willingness to travel within Europe up to 20%.

Funding and contract: SNSF-funded, 100% fixed-term position with an initial one-year contract and possible extension. No stipend amount is listed.

How to apply: Submit the application online only via the ETH Zurich portal. Include a motivation letter, CV, publication list, transcripts, and at least two reference letters. Questions can be directed to Prof. Dr. Marco Stampanoni or Dr. Lucia Romano by email.
