Postdoctoral Position in Soccer Analytics at ETH Zurich
The Algorithms and Visualization Group in the Social Networks Lab at ETH Zürich is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to help advance sports analytics, with a particular focus on association football (soccer). The group, headed by Prof. Dr. Ulrik Brandes, develops network data science methods across different application areas, and this role extends that work into match and performance analysis using modern event and tracking data.
This is a research-focused postdoctoral appointment intended for an initial period of two years, with flexible start date and duration. The successful candidate will contribute to methods for match and performance analysis, teach and supervise students, collaborate with stakeholders in professional football, and develop an independent research agenda and academic profile. The environment combines research, teaching, and practical collaboration, with access to professionals and high-quality data.
Eligibility highlights: a doctoral degree in computer science, mathematics, statistics, or a related field is preferred; applicants with a background in sports and strong computational skills are also welcome. The role seeks someone enthusiastic about data and sports, with a curious, creative, and critical mindset, interest in theoretical and empirical work, and strong English communication skills. German is advantageous.
About the institution: ETH Zurich is one of the world’s leading universities in science and technology, offering excellent working conditions, mentoring and career development, and a supportive environment that values diversity, inclusion, and sustainability.
