About this position
Postdoctoral position in Tropical Forest Ecology, Terrestrial Laser Scanning and Forest Biomass Dynamics at the University of Gothenburg, Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences (BioEnv), Sweden.
This postdoc is part of TWIG, a five-year ERC Starting Grant project focused on tropical forest ecology, terrestrial laser scanning (TLS), forest biomass dynamics, forest carbon balance, and reproducible computational analysis. The project aims to combine repeated TLS with long-term forest inventories to quantify damage, recovery, branch turnover, regrowth, and biomass redistribution in tropical forests.
The successful candidate will develop, validate, and apply a TLS-to-aboveground-biomass workflow, contribute to TLS data acquisition, compare TLS-derived biomass estimates with conventional allometric approaches, and build stand-level carbon-balance calculations. The work involves large 3D point-cloud datasets, scripted quality control, high-performance computing when appropriate, and scientific publication.
Field and analytical work will focus on intensively monitored tropical forests in Amacayacu (Colombian Amazon) and Alto da Figueira (Brazilian Atlantic Forest). The postdoc will work closely with the PI, a PhD student, MSc and BSc students, local field teams, and international collaborators, with opportunities for training, scientific exchange, and co-supervision of students.
Eligibility and requirements: a doctoral degree in Biology, Ecology, Forest Engineering, or another relevant subject; excellent English communication skills; strong quantitative/computational skills; documented TLS experience; scientific programming/scripting and reproducible workflows; and willingness to conduct extended fieldwork in Colombia and Brazil. Desirable experience includes forest remote sensing, forest biomass estimation, tree allometry, uncertainty propagation, individual-tree segmentation, QSMs, R/Python, HPC workflows, and tropical fieldwork.
Employment details: temporary employment for three years, 100% full time, starting February 1, 2027 or by agreement. Salary is individually set.
Application deadline: November 19, 2026.
How to apply: submit the application via the University of Gothenburg recruitment portal. Include a cover letter (max 1 page), CV (max 3 pages), PhD certificate, and complete publication list. If needed, mail non-digital publications to the department so they arrive by the deadline.

What's required
Applicants must have a doctoral degree in Biology, Ecology, Forest Engineering or another relevant subject, with the degree completed before appointment. Strong English communication skills are required. Candidates should have strong quantitative and computational skills for processing and analyzing large ecological datasets, documented experience with terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) data acquisition and processing, and experience with scientific programming or scripting and reproducible data-analysis workflows. Willingness and ability to conduct extended fieldwork in tropical countries, including Colombia and Brazil, are required. Desirable qualifications include publications related to TLS, forest remote sensing, forest biomass, forest structure or forest ecology; experience with individual-tree segmentation, quantitative structure models, forest biomass estimation, tree allometry, uncertainty propagation or forest inventory data; programming in R, Python or similar languages; high-performance or batch computing; tropical fieldwork experience; and Spanish or Portuguese language skills or willingness to learn.
How to apply
Apply through the University of Gothenburg recruitment portal using the Apply button. Submit a complete application in English with a cover letter, CV, PhD certificate, and full publication list. If publications cannot be uploaded digitally, mail one single copy to the Department of Biological and Environmental Science, Att: Daniel Zuleta, University of Gothenburg, Gothenburg, Sweden, so it arrives by the deadline.
