About this position
Postdoctoral Position Available – UHV-XPS Instrumentation Development for PFAS Research
ICPEES (CNRS & University of Strasbourg, France) is recruiting a Postdoctoral Researcher for a 12-month project starting in January 2027 (start window: December 2026 to February 2027). The project focuses on the development of a custom-built ultra-high vacuum (UHV) XPS setup to study the adsorption and thermal transformation of PFAS on activated carbon materials.
The research combines instrumentation development, including a laser-heated reactor coupled to the UHV system, with quasi in situ XPS studies aimed at understanding PFAS capture and conversion into functional fluorinated carbon materials. This is a strong opportunity for candidates interested in surface science, X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy, UHV instrumentation, and environmentally relevant materials research.
The position offers hands-on experience with four UHV-XPS platforms, access to advanced characterization facilities at the University of Strasbourg, and participation in synchrotron experiments at SOLEIL, MAX IV, ESRF, and BESSY. The work is embedded in a multidisciplinary team addressing energy and environmental challenges.
Eligibility highlights: PhD awarded after December 2025 or expected before January 2027; strong XPS and UHV instrumentation experience; English B2–C1; French desirable but not required; independent and proactive problem-solving skills.
Funding: approximately 1900 € net/month.
Contact: Spiros Zafeiratos, Director of Research (CNRS), ICPEES, University of Strasbourg.
