About this position
Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste S.C.P.A. is recruiting a Postdoctoral Research Associate for X-ray absorption spectroscopy beamlines at Elettra 2.0 in Trieste, Italy. The appointment is linked to the development, commissioning, and operation of the XAFS and new XAS-miniWiggler beamlines, with a strong focus on X-ray absorption spectroscopy in the hard X-ray range.
The successful candidate will join the beamline staff to help commission and run the beamlines, support external users on a daily basis, and contribute to the upgrade programme for the XAFS and XAS-mW facilities. The role also offers the opportunity to develop an independent research programme using X-ray absorption spectroscopy, make use of dedicated in-house beamtime, and help promote the scientific capabilities and accomplishments of the beamlines.
The beamlines cover a broad energy range and will support standard XAS applications as well as advanced techniques such as HERFD-XAS and XES. The project is situated within the Elettra 2.0 upgrade, which includes relocation and enhancement of the existing XAFS beamline, improvements to the control and acquisition systems, expanded experimental infrastructure for solid-gas interaction studies, and the construction of a completely new XAS beamline with focusing optics.
Applicants should hold a PhD or equivalent in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, or a related area, awarded no more than six years before the deadline. Proven postdoctoral experience in X-ray absorption spectroscopy or related techniques is required. Skills in Python or similar programming languages are highly desirable, as is experience with HERFD-XAS, XES, XANES simulation, ab initio calculations, commissioning complex instrumentation, and synchrotron beamline operations.
The contract is full-time and fixed-term for 12 months, with a gross annual salary between €30,814.29 and €32,500.00 depending on experience and qualifications. The package also includes accident insurance outside the workplace, supplementary medical insurance, lunch vouchers, and approximately five weeks of paid holiday per year.
The application deadline is 6 September 2026. Applications must include a full CV, complete publication list, relevant supporting information, and the names and contact details of up to two referees. A motivation letter is desirable. Applications are submitted via the Elettra careers webpage.
