About this position

Idaho National Laboratory is recruiting a Postdoctoral Research Associate in battery data analytics and failure analysis at its Idaho Falls, Idaho facility (on-site).

The position sits in the Energy Storage Research and Analysis Department and focuses on high-throughput battery data analysis to characterize, identify, and explain battery degradation, failure modes, and underlying mechanisms. The work is highly interdisciplinary, involving test engineers, battery scientists, data scientists, and AI/ML model developers.

Research topics include application-specific operating conditions and duty cycles, battery performance, life, safety, root-cause analysis, and translating large experimental datasets into physically meaningful insights. Strong interest in Li/Li-ion battery testing, electrochemical and non-electrochemical methods, time/frequency-domain analysis, and scalable data workflows is important. Experience with Python, Matlab, and advanced analytics such as AI/ML is highly desired.

Eligibility highlights: PhD in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, materials science, or a closely related field; degree completed by appointment start and within the previous 5 years; strong English communication skills; ability to work independently and provide timely updates; expected publication and conference presentation output.

Funding: annual salary of $105,144. Offer and renewal are contingent on funding. Benefits include medical, dental, vision, flexible spending accounts, 401(k) access, paid time off, and relocation support.

Application deadline: 2026-09-15.
