About this position

Postdoctoral Research Associate opportunity in Computational Supersonic Combustion at the University of Sydney, within the School of Aerospace, Mechanical & Mechatronic Engineering and the ARC Training Centre for High-Speed Propulsion, Rocket and Launch Systems (HiPR-LS).

This is a full-time, two-year fixed-term postdoctoral position with potential for extension, commencing in January/February 2027. The role is based at the Camperdown campus in Australia and offers a base salary of Academic Level A $117,936 + 17% superannuation.

Research themes include supersonic combustion, compressible reacting flows, high-speed fluid dynamics, computational fluid dynamics, direct numerical simulation, large eddy simulation, and probability density function methods. The successful candidate will conduct advanced computational research, help develop new models and solvers for supersonic combustion and compressible mixing, and contribute to high-performance computing work relevant to advanced propulsion concepts.

Eligibility highlights include a completed PhD in Mechanical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering (or equivalent), strong research experience in combustion and CFD, code development and complex numerical simulation skills, and the ability to work in a multidisciplinary environment with academic and industry collaborators. Experience mentoring students and developing technical educational content is also valued.

Applicants must have unrestricted work rights in Australia; visa sponsorship is not available. Applications close on 2026-11-15. Apply through the Workday application portal with a cover letter, CV, and supporting documents.
