About this position

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is accepting applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate focused on the intersection of materials science, materials characterization, and data science. The role is based in the Manufacturing Systems Analytics (MSA) Group within the Manufacturing Science Division (MSD), Energy Science and Technology Directorate (ESTD).

The successful candidate will develop algorithms and software tools for visualizing and analyzing materials characterization data, create data-driven characterization workflows, and advance understanding of process-structure-property relationships through digital manufacturing practices. The post also involves supporting R&D staff, publishing in peer-reviewed journals and conferences, and contributing to ORNL’s research mission.

Required background includes a Ph.D. in materials science or a closely related field completed within the last five years, strong experience with characterization methods such as microscopy, XRD, EBSD, and X-ray CT, and programming skills in Python or modern C/C++/C#. Experience with AI/ML techniques and executing research projects is emphasized.

This is a postdoctoral opening, not a scholarship. The appointment is up to 24 months with possible extension, depending on performance and funding availability. ORNL notes that visa sponsorship is not available for this position.

To apply, submit your application through the ORNL jobs portal and provide three letters of reference. References may be uploaded directly or emailed to [email protected] with the position title and number in the subject line.

Location: Knoxville, Tennessee, United States.
