About this position

Postdoctoral Research Associate in Experimental Supersonic Combustion at the University of Sydney, Australia.

This full-time, two-year fixed-term postdoctoral role is based at the Camperdown campus in the School of Aerospace, Mechanical & Mechatronic Engineering (AMME) and the ARC Training Centre for High-Speed Propulsion, Rocket and Launch Systems.

The project focuses on supersonic combustion, compressible reacting flows, high-speed propulsion, and experimental fluid mechanics. The successful candidate will conduct advanced research on how compressibility suppresses fuel-air mixing, quantify mixing suppression in reacting flows, and develop approaches to design around this limitation. The work includes experimental research using advanced laser diagnostics, novel subsonic and supersonic burners, and state-of-the-art combustion facilities.

Eligibility highlights include a completed PhD in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent, plus research experience in combustion, compressible/high-speed fluid dynamics, supersonic or reacting flows, experimental fluid mechanics, or laser diagnostics. Experience with sophisticated experimental techniques and designing combustion rigs is especially relevant. Applicants must have unrestricted work rights in Australia; visa sponsorship is not available.

Funding details: Academic Level A salary of AUD 117,936 plus 17% superannuation. This is a paid postdoctoral appointment rather than a scholarship.

How to apply: submit your application via the Apply button on the University of Sydney Workday page, including a cover letter, CV, and any supporting documents. Applications close on 2026-10-07 at 11:59 PM.
