About this position

Postdoctoral Research Associate at the University of Exeter in the United Kingdom.

This is a NERC-funded, full-time, fixed-term post for 12 months starting 01/10/2026. The role sits in the Faculty of Environment, Science and Economy and supports the work of Professor Gabriel Yvon-Durocher on AI4DigiMiC, a collaborative project developing hybrid artificial intelligence models to guide microbiome-driven soil restoration.

The project combines microbial ecology, microbiology, soil microbiomes, genomics, environmental data, and predictive modelling. The successful candidate will lead the experimental microbiology programme, working with soil microbiomes and microbial isolates from the UK Crop Microbiome CryoBank. Tasks include reviving and culturing microbial communities, running high-throughput measurements of microbial growth, respiration, and carbon-use efficiency, and analysing and interpreting the resulting data.

Applicants should have a relevant PhD (or be nearing completion) or equivalent experience in microbial ecology, microbiology, or a related field. Strong quantitative and data-analysis skills are expected, along with experience in designing and conducting complex microbial experiments and maintaining reproducible records. Experience with microplate-based assays, microbial growth or respiration measurements, and analysis in R or Python would be advantageous.

The post offers a starting salary from £35,302 on grade E, depending on knowledge, skills and experience. To apply, review the job description and person specification, then submit an application via the University of Exeter careers portal. For further information, contact Professor Gabriel Yvon-Durocher at [email protected].
