About this position

University of Oxford is advertising a Postdoctoral Research Associate position in naturalistic working memory and virtual reality in Oxford, England, United Kingdom.

The project investigates sensorimnemonic decisions—how people choose between using information held in memory versus relying on the external environment during extended, naturalistic behaviour. The research uses immersive virtual-reality object-sorting and object-copying paradigms, complemented by in-person and online studies.

The successful candidate will develop and validate experimental manipulations, collect and analyse rich behavioural data, and produce openly reusable tasks, code, data, and documentation. The role involves close work with the Principal Investigators and project team and substantial responsibility for day-to-day scientific delivery.

Applicants must have completed a DPhil/PhD in experimental psychology, cognitive psychology, cognitive neuroscience, or a closely related discipline. Strong evidence of experience designing, programming, validating, and maintaining immersive VR experiments is required, including a fully operational VR object-copying task and an online VR experimental pipeline ready for immediate deployment. Experience with Unity or a comparable platform, complex object interactions, and high-resolution behavioural logging is also required.

The post is full-time and fixed term for 12 months, with a start date of 1 November 2026 or as soon as possible after that. The application deadline is 7 October 2026 at midday.

Apply online through the University of Oxford recruitment portal and upload a supporting statement, CV, and the contact details of two referees.
