About this position
Adelaide University is advertising a Postdoctoral Research Associate position based in Mawson Lakes, Adelaide, Australia, within the College of Engineering and Information Technology. The role is part of a multidisciplinary project focused on the next generation of operational forest inventory technologies, combining unmanned aerial laser scanning (ULS), terrestrial and mobile laser scanning (TLS/MLS), statistical calibration-transfer, and machine learning to improve estimation of forest structural attributes across plantation forest environments.
The successful candidate will work on research topics including LiDAR fusion, domain adaptation, forest inventory, uncertainty quantification, automated tree detection and segmentation, structural reconstruction, and scalable processing pipelines for large point-cloud datasets. The project also emphasizes integration of aerial, terrestrial, and mobile LiDAR with other sensing modalities, and aims to support timber valuation, carbon accounting, forest monitoring, and precision forest management.
Eligibility highlights include a PhD or near-completion in Remote Sensing, Computer Vision, Forestry, Geomatics, Machine Learning, Spatial Statistics, or a closely related field. Applicants should have research experience in LiDAR processing, forest inventory, photogrammetry, machine learning, computer vision, or geospatial analysis, plus strong quantitative/statistical skills and programming experience in Python, R, or MATLAB. The appointment is full-time and fixed term for 12 months.
Funding details listed in the post include a salary of $103,962-$111,384 per annum plus 17% superannuation. The application deadline is 22 October 2026 at 11:30 pm.
