About this position

Lancaster University’s School of Physics and Astronomy is recruiting a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Supernova Cosmology (reference 1077-26) in Lancaster, United Kingdom.

The project is with Dr Mathew Smith and is supported by an STFC-funded research programme. The successful candidate will work on building an independent, homogeneous low-redshift sample of SNeIa from the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF), and combine it with higher-redshift measurements from surveys such as the Dark Energy Survey, Vera Rubin Observatory LSST, and related large-scale survey data to constrain the equation of state of dark energy.

Research activities will focus on two main areas: developing a simulation and cosmological inference framework for ZTF, and measuring/modeling environmental biases and their interaction with survey selection effects. The project aims to produce a low-redshift anchor useful for future work with Vera Rubin/LSST and 4MOST-TiDES.

Eligibility highlights include a PhD (or near completion) in astrophysics, physics, cosmology, or a related field, plus strong Python programming skills and experience in supernova cosmology, statistical/systematic-uncertainty analysis, or large-scale survey science. Excellent communication and teamwork skills are also required.

The post is available immediately, with an anticipated start date of 1 January 2027 (later start up to early Spring 2027 possible). The appointment is fixed-term until September 2029. Salary is £39,906 to £46,049.

To apply, submit your materials through Lancaster University’s online portal. The application should include a CV, publication list, and a 2-page research statement describing your past research experience and its relevance to the project’s science goals. Deadline for full consideration: 30 October 2026 at midnight UK time.
