About this position

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Researcher in Transient Astrophysics at the University of Oxford (Denys Wilkinson Building, Oxford, England) as part of the five-year STFC Large Award TRANSCEND.

The project sits at the intersection of astronomy, physics, time-domain astrophysics, supernovae, cosmology, galaxy evolution, and survey science. TRANSCEND will exploit Vera Rubin/LSST transient data and the 4MOST Time-Domain Extragalactic Survey (TiDES) to study how stars explode and enrich the Universe, how supermassive black holes grow, and the nature of dark energy.

At Oxford, the postholder will work on either SNe Ia cosmology groundwork or rare transient follow-up and characterization. The role includes opportunities to teach and is part of a broader collaboration with Lancaster University, the University of Southampton, and Queen’s University Belfast, each offering separate posts.

Eligibility: applicants should possess, or be close to obtaining, a doctorate in physics or a related field, with a strong background in physics or astrophysics. Relevant research experience and a proven record in time-domain astrophysics, supernovae, galaxy evolution, cosmology, or survey science are expected.

Funding/terms: full-time, fixed-term appointment for 5 years, Research Grade 7. No stipend amount is stated in the post.

Deadline: noon GMT on Friday, 6 November 2026.

How to apply: submit an online application via the jobs.ac.uk link. Upload a CV, publication list, and a 2-page research statement, and provide details of two referees. Referees will only be contacted if you are shortlisted.
