About this position

Postdoctoral Research Associate in Turbulent Mixing and Arctic Ocean Climate Modelling at the University of Edinburgh, School of Mathematics.

This fixed-term postdoctoral opportunity is part of a UKRI-funded project with Dr Lois Baker on understanding turbulent mixing in a changing Arctic Ocean. The research focuses on fluid dynamics, oceanography, climate modelling, parameterisation, and numerical simulation. The project aims to understand small-scale processes in the Arctic Ocean, develop parameterisations for ocean and climate models, and assess how turbulent mixing affects the Arctic Ocean state.

The successful candidate will work with the PI and collaborators to develop theoretical models, verify them against idealised numerical simulations using Oceananigans, and use existing ocean observations to identify regimes and evaluate results. Parameterisation schemes will be implemented and assessed in a regional Arctic model in collaboration with the National Oceanography Centre. The balance of theoretical and computational work can be tailored to the candidate’s strengths.

This is a full-time role (35 hours per week) for 36 months, with salary in grade UE07 (£41,064 to £48,822 per annum, pro rata if part time). The position is based in Edinburgh, United Kingdom, with hybrid working possible. The post is funded by UKRI.

Applicants should provide a CV, a research statement (maximum 2 pages) describing how the project supports their career trajectory, and contact details for two academic referees. The closing date is 14 October 2026, and interviews are scheduled for the week commencing 2 November 2026.

Eligibility notes include right-to-work evidence for the UK; the university notes that sponsorship for international workers may be possible depending on the circumstances and role conditions. The advert also encourages applications from women and other under-represented groups in applied mathematics.
