About this position

PhD Position at Inria Rennes in inverse problems for stochastic models under location uncertainty applied to ocean dynamics.

This doctoral project sits at the intersection of mathematics, physics, earth science, environmental science, and scientific computing. The thesis will be supervised by Gilles Tissot (Inria Rennes) and Quentin Jamet (SHOM), and directed by Étienne Mémin (Inria Rennes), within the Inria Odyssey team in Rennes. It is part of the ANR NOUILLES project and involves collaboration with AIRSEA (Grenoble), IGE (Grenoble), SHOM (Brest), and IRD-LEGOS (Toulouse).

The research aims to develop inverse methods for stochastic ocean models under location uncertainty, with a focus on estimating the covariance of stochastic noise so that the model reproduces reference simulations. The case study is deep convection in ocean dynamics, using theoretical developments, physical modelling, and numerical implementation. Methods may include adjoint and ensemble approaches, and scalability to high-dimensional ocean models is a key challenge.

Applicants should have a background in applied mathematics, fluid mechanics, or oceanography, and a strong interest in numerical simulation. Programming experience in Python or Julia, and Fortran or C++, is an advantage.

The position is a 3-year fixed-term PhD contract. The start date is 2026-11-01, and the application deadline is 2026-11-07. Applications must be submitted online via the Inria website.
