About this position

Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Arctic Aquatic Ecology and Climate Change at UiT The Arctic University of Norway, within the ERC Advanced Grant project RiverPulse.

This postdoctoral position focuses on Arctic aquatic ecology, salmon ecology, freshwater ecology, hydrology, and environmental science. The successful candidate will analyse longitudinal ecological and environmental datasets on water quality, temperature, flow, and salmon populations across three river regions: Reisa (Norway), Tornio (Finland/Sweden), and Kapisillit (Greenland). The work combines statistical modelling and time-series analysis to identify ecological change and understand how warming Arctic conditions affect river and salmon ecosystems.

The position is embedded in an interdisciplinary team spanning the humanities, social sciences, and environmental sciences. The postdoc will contribute ecological evidence to broader RiverPulse research on river–salmon–human relations, governance, and climate-driven change. The role includes shared project activities, workshops, dissemination, and periods of extended fieldwork in one or more research sites.

Eligibility highlights: a PhD in freshwater ecology, aquatic ecology, fisheries biology, hydrology, environmental science, or a related field; strong quantitative skills; experience with ecological responses to climate change; excellent English. Experience with Arctic or northern freshwater systems, Atlantic salmon, long-term datasets, interdisciplinary environmental research, and relevant field-site languages is preferred.

Funding and terms: fixed-term appointment for 3 years, with a gross annual salary of NOK 620,000–665,100 (100% position), plus standard Norwegian public pension benefits. The workplace is in Tromsø, Norway, and some travel is expected.

Application deadline: 15 November 2026. Apply through Jobbnorge and submit the required documents, including a 3-page research plan, motivation letter, CV, transcripts, English documentation, references, and up to five relevant publications.

What's required

A PhD in freshwater ecology, aquatic ecology, fisheries biology, hydrology, environmental science or another relevant field is required. Applicants need strong quantitative research skills, especially statistical modelling and time-series analysis of long-term ecological, environmental or population datasets, plus research experience relevant to ecological responses to environmental or climate change. Excellent written and spoken English is required. Preferred qualifications include experience with Arctic or northern freshwater systems, Atlantic salmon, long-term ecological datasets, climate-impact research or interdisciplinary environmental research, and knowledge of one or more field-site languages (Norwegian, Kven, Northern Sámi, Finnish, Swedish, Meänkieli, Kalaallisut or Danish). Working knowledge of Norwegian or another Scandinavian language is desirable.

How to apply

Apply via Jobbnorge by the deadline and include the application letter, motivation letter, project proposal, CV, diplomas and transcripts, English proficiency documentation, 2-3 references, and up to five relevant publications.
