About this position

Postdoc opportunity in riverine heatwaves, hydrology, climate change, and environmental science at the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL (SLF), Davos, Switzerland.

The Hydrology and Climate Impacts in Mountain Regions group at the WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research SLF and the Department of Environmental Systems Science at ETH Zurich is seeking a Postdoc on the risks of riverine heatwaves (f/m/d) starting from spring 2027. The project, Riverine heatwaves under climate change (RiHeat), is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation.

The research focuses on assessing the risks of anomalously high river water temperatures for fish populations and energy production in the Central Alps under current and future climate conditions. The work involves hydro-climatic extreme events, water resources, extreme value analyses, statistical modelling, climate impact assessments, and interdisciplinary risk assessment.

Applicants should hold a PhD in hydrology, environmental sciences, climate sciences, or a closely related field. Strong skills in R or Python programming, statistics, risk assessments, and data science are required. A strong publication record for career stage and excellent English communication skills are expected. The role is full-time and temporary, with the work location at SLF in Davos and possible collaboration with ETH Zurich.

To apply, upload a cover letter, CV, certificate and transcript of your highest degree, and an example of your own scientific writing in English via the application webpage. Email applications will not be considered. The application deadline is 7 January 2027.
