About this position
Postdoctoral Research Fellow position in the QUANTA project at the University of Bergen, Department of Psychosocial Science, Faculty of Psychology. The project, Evolution of Cognitive Tools for Quantification (QUANTA), is an ERC Synergy Grant collaboration involving UiB, CNRS Bordeaux, and the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig.
The postdoctoral researcher will work with Prof. Andrea Bender and the QUANTA team on the compilation of data on body-based counting systems, building a large-scale database, coding data for representational analyses, and testing hypotheses about the evolution of numerical cognition, quantification, and cultural evolution. The broader project investigates the origin and diversification of numeral systems across societies and languages.
This is a 3-year fixed-term postdoctoral position starting by 1 January 2027 at the latest. The advertised salary is NOK 685,900 before taxes, with possible higher pay for highly qualified candidates. The role includes pension coverage and welfare benefits.
Eligibility highlights: applicants must hold a PhD in psychology or another cognitive/social science focused on cognition and cultural evolution, or have submitted the thesis before the deadline. Required experience includes large-scale literature search, database construction, and expertise in at least one relevant method such as ethnographic database harvesting, representational analysis, cognitive experiments, anthropological fieldwork, or phylogenetic comparative analysis with Bayesian tools. Experience with body-based numeral systems is required; sign-language numeral systems are an advantage. Strong English skills are required.
How to apply: submit the application through Jobbnorge with a motivation/research statement, CV, diplomas and transcripts, proof of thesis submission if needed, publication list, up to 3 selected publications, certificates/references, and two referees’ contact details. The deadline is 1 September 2026.
