About this position

Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Data Science for Smart Horticulture at Western Sydney University in Australia.

This is a full-time, fixed-term postdoctoral opening for 3 years based at Hawkesbury Campus with flexible working arrangements. The role sits within the Industrial Training Centre for Smart and Sustainable Horticulture (SaSH) and focuses on improving productivity and profitability in protected horticultural systems, especially tomato and snacking capsicums.

The research combines data science, statistical modelling, mechanistic modelling, stochastic modelling, and physics-informed machine learning. The successful candidate will design experiments and data acquisition strategies, align sampling protocols and metadata standards, and build scalable workflows that integrate imaging, sensors, environmental variables, and operational data. The post also involves validating predictive and explanatory models for crop growth, stress, yield, and quality, and translating outputs into reproducible pipelines, code repositories, dashboards, and model interfaces.

Eligibility highlights: a PhD in a relevant quantitative discipline or equivalent experience; strong Python and scientific computing skills; experience with complex datasets and reproducible research workflows; ability to work across disciplines and manage deadlines.

Funding and benefits: salary at Academic Level A of $97,153–$117,376 per annum plus 17% superannuation and leave loading. The university also notes employer visa sponsorship if required.

Application deadline: 31 August 2026 at 11:59 pm. Apply only through the university’s online recruitment system and include job reference REF1452K. Position enquiries go to Professor Oula Ghannoum at [email protected].
