About this position

National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED) is recruiting a Research Fellow (2nd year) in the Water and Sediment Disaster Prevention Research Division, Extreme Weather Disaster Research Area. This is a postdoctoral-equivalent, fixed-term full-time contract position based in Tsukuba City, Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan.

The project focuses on high millimeter-wave fixed wireless communication as an alternative to optical fiber links. Research tasks include estimation of radio wave attenuation and attenuation nowcasting using weather radar, millimeter-wave propagation and wireless transmission experiments, and development of data analysis and quality control methods for weather radar. The work sits at the intersection of computer science, electrical engineering, environmental science, disaster prevention engineering, physics, and statistics.

Eligibility requires a doctoral degree (or expected completion before appointment, or equivalent expertise). Applicants should have experience with C, FORTRAN, and Python on UNIX/Linux systems, and must be able to communicate research results in Japanese and English. The annual salary is stated as approximately ¥4.69 million to ¥7.20 million basic salary, with overtime handling, commuting allowance, and social insurance coverage.

The application window is July 8, 2026 to September 28, 2026 (must arrive by 5 PM). Apply by email with the required documents, including CV, research summary, publication list, future research aspirations, recommendation letter or self-recommendation statement, selected paper reprints, degree certificate if applicable, and the required pledge form.
