About this position

University of British Columbia (UBC), Vancouver, Canada is recruiting a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Sun Lab within the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, Faculty of Science.

The project focuses on host-pathogen interactions and host-directed therapeutics, with research spanning microbial genetics, immunology, cell biology, high-throughput screening, omics, and in vivo models. The lab studies host immunity to pathogens such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium, macrophage biology, antimicrobial drug development, wastewater surveillance, and cancer therapeutics.

The successful candidate will lead a project on the interplay between host immune pathways and microbial pathogenesis to identify and validate novel therapeutic targets. Responsibilities include bacterial culture and genetics, molecular cloning, mammalian and primary cell culture, CRISPR-based approaches, flow cytometry, ELISA, Western blotting, microscopy, omics analyses, and work in CL3 facilities under strict biosafety protocols. The role also includes manuscript and grant writing, presenting findings, mentoring students, and contributing to lab organization.

Required background includes a completed PhD in microbiology, immunology, cell biology, biochemistry, or a related field. Experience with bacterial genetics, molecular cloning, mammalian cell culture, and standard immunology/cell biology assays is expected. Preferred experience includes animal infection models, high-throughput screening, CRISPR, PBMC isolation, omics, and a strong publication record.

Funding: expected salary is CAD $60,000 per year. The PI will support applications for postdoctoral fellowships and external funding. Applications are accepted through the UBC Careers Portal until 2026-09-25.
