About this position

The University of Michigan Department of Epidemiology is recruiting a postdoctoral research fellow for work on infectious disease transmission modeling, with a focus on influenza transmission in households.

The project uses combined data from multiple prospective household cohort studies to examine demographic, behavioral, and environmental factors that facilitate or prevent transmission. The fellow will design and conduct household simulation models, analyze longitudinal cohort data, and contribute to scientific manuscripts as lead and co-author.

This position is supervised by Dr. Andrew Brouwer and Dr. Joseph Eisenberg in the University of Michigan’s epidemiology community, with connections to infectious disease research centers and modeling initiatives. The role also includes opportunities to collaborate on funded studies and assist with extramural grant preparation.

Eligibility highlights: a conferred doctorate before the start date; a strong record in infectious disease modeling research; prior training in simulation modeling, parameter estimation, and uncertainty quantification; and proficiency in R (preferred) or Python. Experience with household transmission models and respiratory virus modeling is preferred.

Funding: the fellowship is funded by a National Institutes of Allergy and Infectious Disease grant. It is a one-year term-limited appointment with possible extension depending on funding and performance.

Work location: Ann Arbor Campus, Ann Arbor, Michigan, United States. The role allows a hybrid schedule, with on-site work expected 2 days per week.

How to apply: submit a single document containing a cover letter and CV through the University of Michigan careers portal. The posting window is October 19, 2026 to November 9, 2026.

What's required

Doctorate in epidemiology or another public health science, or a PhD in a computational or quantitative field such as statistics or applied mathematics if other criteria are met. The doctorate must be conferred before the fellowship start date. Applicants should have a record of accomplishment in infectious disease modeling research, with publications, presentations, and training. Prior training or research in simulation modeling, parameter estimation, and uncertainty quantification is required. Proficiency in R (preferred) or Python is required, along with strong data management, data analysis, data visualization, and scientific communication skills. Prior experience with household transmission models and influenza or other respiratory virus models is desired.

How to apply

Submit one document containing a cover letter describing your interest in computational approaches to understanding influenza transmission and a current CV. Apply through the University of Michigan careers portal.
