About this position

The University of Bergen (UiB), Department of Mathematics, is advertising a 3-year postdoctoral research fellow position in Physics-Informed Machine Learning for Offshore Wind. The position is linked to a recently granted Horizon Europe project and sits within the MEGA research group, led by Associate Professor Yan Li.

The project brings together a consortium of 9 partners from 6 EU/EEA countries and aims to deliver timely, feasible solutions for offshore wind turbines. The research agenda focuses on improving structural awareness, real-time reliability assessment, and predictive maintenance decision support through integrated sensing, modelling, and digital frameworks.

The postdoctoral fellow will work on strengthening the link between basic and applied research. Core tasks include developing and reviewing data-driven surrogate models for real-time reconstruction and forward simulation, creating numerical algorithms for physics reconstruction using sparse data, implementing data assimilation pipelines that integrate physics and surrogate models, collaborating with project partners, participating in project meetings and activities, and contributing to project deliverables.

This is an interdisciplinary position with opportunities for collaboration with leading offshore wind experts, participation in international conferences and meetings, and engagement in a broader research environment. The project expects research visits and joint activities as needed, and these will be financially supported.

Eligibility: Applicants must hold, or have submitted for assessment, a PhD equivalent to the Norwegian doctoral degree in marine engineering, applied mechanics, physics, computer science, or a closely related field. The PhD must be awarded before appointment. A record of high-quality journal publications is required. Experience with related research activities and a strong interdisciplinary profile are advantageous. Good written and spoken English is required, along with the ability to work independently, systematically, and collaboratively.

Employment details: The appointment is full-time, temporary, and based in Bergen, Norway. The expected start date is 1 January 2027. Salary is on the Norwegian state salary scale for postdoctoral research fellows (currently NOK 685,900 before tax), with standard public pension and welfare benefits.

Application: Apply via Jobbnorge by the deadline and upload a research motivation statement, a detailed explanation of how you meet the requirements, two referees’ contact information (including your main PhD advisor), CV, relevant certificates/references, publication list with links, and transcripts/diplomas. If you have not yet completed your PhD, include confirmation from your institution that the thesis has been submitted.
