About this position
The University of Bergen (UiB), Norway, is advertising a Postdoctoral Research Fellow position within Quantum Sensing at the Department of Physics and Technology.
This 3-year fixed-term postdoctoral project focuses on quantum sensing, quantum biosensing, physics, and biophysics. The research aims to develop innovative sensing techniques using nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond to study intracellular processes in stressed cells. The project includes designing and optimizing a custom confocal quantum diamond microscope (QDM), tracking NV-containing nanodiamonds inside cells, and performing high-resolution quantum biosensing experiments on membraneless organelles and reactive oxygen species under irradiation.
The successful candidate will design and assemble the confocal microscopy setup, develop particle-tracking algorithms, perform quantum sensing experiments, and analyse data. The role also involves developing and evaluating new sensing modalities.
Applicants must have a PhD-equivalent degree in physics or biophysics, or have submitted the thesis before the deadline (with the PhD awarded before appointment). Required experience includes confocal microscopy, image analysis, and QDM setup development. Experience with cells, membraneless organelles, or cell irradiation is an advantage. Strong English skills, independence, and teamwork are expected.
Funding includes a gross annual salary of NOK 685,900 on appointment, pension enrolment, and welfare benefits. The position may be extended in some cases up to 4 years total.
Deadline: 17 September 2026. Applications must be uploaded to JobbNorge with a research-interest statement, detailed qualification letter, CV, references, publication list, and transcripts/diplomas.
Contact persons: Researcher Justas Zalieckas and Head of Department Kjetil Ullaland at the University of Bergen.
